Stay In The Know

US citizens can currently visit most European countries (Schengen Area) visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. Starting in late 2026, U.S. citizens must obtain an ETIAS travel authorization (European Travel Information and Authorization System) online before traveling.

Key Requirements & Future Changes

  • ETIAS Application: The application is online, costs €20 (roughly $8–$24), and is generally valid for three years or until the passport expires.
  • Long-Term Stays: Stays longer than 90 days still require a specific national visa from the country where you will spend most of your time.
  • Entry Requirements: You may be required to show proof of return flights, travel health insurance, and sufficient funds at border control.

  • Current (Pre-2026): No visa is required for short stays, but your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date.
  • Future (Starting Late 2026): The ETIAS authorization will be mandatory for visiting 30+ European countries. It is not a visa but a pre-screening, similar to the U.S. ESTA.

Where to Apply

  • ETIAS: When it goes live, use the official ETIAS website or mobile app to avoid extra fees from third-party sites.
  • Visa/Residence Permits: Visit the embassy or consulate of the specific European country you plan to visit for stays exceeding 90 days.

Ensure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area
